CurrPorts software is a free tool created by Windows XP Professional Edition. Windows Vista and Windows 7 have similar application but the major difference between these two is that Windows XP offers a graphical user interface. You can see all open ports in a separate window. To find application with graphical interface, you need to press Alt+F then Type in the application (with quotation marks) and Windows XP will highlight useful application. This way, you can find the application with a simple click.
The main window of currPorts has four panes. Each pane shows different application running on your computer. There is an option to switch between windows (switch to another window by pressing Alt+F). If you need to open more than one application on your system, there is an option to open the related application in separate window by pressing Alt+F. There is also an option to switch to a specific application by pressing Alt+F then Tab.
The second tool is 'log line' option. It enables you to get detailed information about each process. If you find the process name with uppercase letters, it means that this application is running with administrative privileges (administrative privilege is granted only when you have logged on as a administrator). The '?' symbol in the left part of the field indicates that the process is not started. If you want to know the status of running processes, you should press TAB button.
